Electron-Collision-Induced Alignment of Rare Gases near Threshold

چکیده
Results of a semirelativistic R-matrix calculation are compared with experimental values for light polarizations and alignment parameters of the second excited-state manifolds of neon and krypton following electron impact excitation. The calculations focus on the near-threshold regime, where negative-ion resonances have a significant effect on the atomic alignment. A grouping of the alignment values according to the electronic angular momentum J of the excited state is observed and qualitatively explained by angular momentum coupling considerations. Collision-induced luminescence from the impact of ions and cluster ions on solid rare gases
Light emission during the collision of ions and cluster ions on a metal surface covered by rare gas matrices of variable thickness is reported. The light intensity as a function of distance from the metal surface follows the classical image dipole theory. The spectral signature of the light corresponds to the fluorescence of the neutral cluster species deposited as well as to fragments. The nat...
متن کاملOscillatory alignment phenomena in Rydberg-atom–rare-gas collisions
Retention of orbital alignment during near-resonant energy transfer collisions of rare-gas projectiles with excited alkaline-earth-metal atoms is explored theoretically for scattering of Xe from Rydberg states of Ca. For such collisions, conventional interpretations of alignment phenomena, which are based on potential curves for a transient molecule thought to form during the collision, are not...
متن کاملFluid description of collisional current filamentation instability of a weakly ionized plasma in the presence of magnetic field
In this paper, the collisional filamentation instability of an electron beam-weakly magnetized and ionized plasma has been investigated in the presence of background plasma, using the fluid description. By describing the equilibrium configuration in the presence of binary collision terms between charged and neutral particles and using the local approximation method, the dispersion relation (DR)...
متن کاملSecondary threshold laws for multiple ionization of atoms
We propose a physical mechanism that leads to the emergence of secondary threshold laws in processes of multiple ionization of atoms. We argue that the removal of n electrons sn.2d from a many-electron atom may proceed via intermediate resonant states of the corresponding doubly charged ion. For atoms such as rare gases, the density of such resonances in the vicinity of subsequent ionization th...
متن کاملSpin-exchange-induced circularly polarized molecular fluorescence.
We have measured the circular polarization of light emitted from both atomic H and molecular H2 after bombarding H2 with longitudinally polarized electrons. For both atomic and molecular fluorescence near threshold we observe a circular polarization as great as 10% of the electron polarization. This represents the first direct observation of spin transfer in electron-molecule collisions.
